Still tweaking my newest cookie recipe, but thought i'd share a savory baked snack in the meantime....this is a favorite in our family this time of year.
Nuts and Bolts
(been told this could be called 'Chex Mix on Steroids' or 'Chex has Bite' - ymmv, as i don't generally eat Chex Mix)
1 c butter or margarine
3 Tab Worcestershire sauce
4 Tab garlic powder
2 Tab seasoned salt
4-5 c pretzel sticks (the "bolts")
4 c round toasted oat cereal (the "nuts")
4 c wheat square cereal
4 c rice square cereal
4 c corn square cereal
3 c mixed nuts
Melt margarine and thoroughly mix in Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and seasoned salt.
Combine remaining ingredients in large roasting pan and drizzle with butter mixture. Toss to coat thoroughly.
Bake uncovered in a 250 degree oven for 60-90 minutes, stirring every 15mins. Spread out to cool, then store in airtight container.
Notes: i've always used our big covered roaster, and at mixing time just put the lid on and shook the whole thing. CARE MUST BE USED - obviously the roaster/handles are going to be hot, and if you don't have a good grip the lid can slide letting the hot contents out. Also, you get a bunch of crumbs, but the kids always seem to love that part later :) Other people just use a big spoon/etc to stir around the contents. Your choice.
Best way to cool is to cover your counter or tabletop with newspaper and then cover the newsprint with a layer of paper towels. Will absorb any extra grease, and you can pick up the edges to pour the whole thing in the bowl once it's cool. Well, if you're semi-coordinated (my sister has trouble with this part *grin*)
